Okay, so I decided to try out this “perm on bob hair Korean” thing I’ve been seeing all over the place. I mean, those Korean dramas have some seriously stylish hair, and I figured, why not give it a shot?
First off, I scoured the internet for pictures of what I wanted. You know, those soft, wavy bobs that look effortless but probably take a ton of work. I finally settled on a few styles that seemed doable and headed to this Korean salon that a friend recommended. It was a little intimidating, to be honest. Everyone in there seemed to have perfect hair.
I showed the stylist the photos, and we chatted for a bit about what kind of look I was going for. She explained that the Korean perm is different from the old-school perms that our moms used to get. Instead of tight, frizzy curls, this is supposed to give you loose, natural-looking waves. She called it “Mul-Gyul,” which apparently means “water waves” and that sounded pretty good to me.
Then, the process began. She washed my hair, applied some kind of solution, and wrapped sections of my hair around these special rods. It felt a bit weird, but it didn’t hurt or anything. I sat under one of those heat lamp things for a while, flipping through magazines and trying not to think about how I might end up looking like a poodle.
After what felt like forever, she took out the rods and rinsed my hair. Then came the moment of truth. She blow-dried it a bit and styled it, and honestly, I was pretty amazed.
- My hair was wavy!
- Not like, super curly, but soft, beachy waves.
- It looked so much more voluminous and stylish than before.
She gave me some tips on how to take care of it, like not washing it for a couple of days and using special products for permed hair. I was a little worried about the damage, but she assured me that as long as I followed her instructions, my hair would be fine. The stylist did mention that it is a popular style for older Korean women, but it was also a trend for 2024.

The Results
It’s been a few weeks now, and I’m still loving it. It’s so much easier to style in the morning. I just scrunch it a bit with some product, and I’m good to go. Getting this perm was definitely a good decision. I feel like I finally have the hair I’ve always wanted. I will keep observing to see if my hair gets damaged, but as of right now I am happy with the results. I might try a slightly different style next time, but for now, I’m all about these Korean waves!
