Okay, so today I’m diving into something really cool I did a while back – exploring the story behind the Cartier Maria Felix jewelry collection. It all started when I stumbled upon an old article about this Mexican actress, María Félix. She was apparently a huge deal back in the day, and she had this crazy love for jewelry.

The story goes that in 1975, she walked into Cartier in Paris with a baby crocodile. Yes, a real, live baby croc! She wanted them to make a necklace that looked exactly like her pet. I mean, who does that? Intrigued, I had to know more.
So I started digging. I spent hours reading old articles and looking at pictures. It turns out that Maria Felix wasn’t just any actress. She was like the Elizabeth Taylor of Mexico, known for her bold personality and even bolder style. And that crocodile necklace? Cartier actually made it. It ended up being two crocodiles, intertwined, one covered in yellow diamonds and the other in emeralds. Absolutely wild!
My next step was trying to find pictures of her wearing these pieces. I mean, if you’re gonna commission a crocodile necklace, you’re gonna show it off, right? After a lot of searching, I found some amazing shots. There she was, dripping in diamonds and emeralds, with those crocodiles wrapped around her neck. She also had a serpent-themed necklace and bracelet, which I eventually found were also commissioned by her. I was amazed.
But I wanted to see these pieces in person. After some research, I found out that some of her jewelry was displayed in Mexico City from time to time. Lucky for me, I had a trip planned there a few months later. So, of course, I made it a point to visit the museum where they were exhibited.
The Arrival
I get to the museum. It was one of those old, beautiful buildings with huge ceilings and marble floors. I find the exhibit, and there they were, behind glass, but still stunning. They’re even more impressive in person. Seeing them up close, I could really appreciate the craftsmanship. Every scale, every tooth, perfectly rendered in gold and precious stones.
Diving Deeper
I spent a good hour just staring at them, taking pictures, and reading all the little plaques. I learned that Cartier had recently created a whole new collection inspired by Maria Felix’s original pieces. I guess her legacy lives on!
Reflection
Leaving the museum, I felt like I had gone on this little adventure. It started with a crazy story about a baby crocodile and ended with me standing in front of some of the most unique jewelry I’d ever seen. It just goes to show how a little curiosity can lead you to some pretty amazing places. And who knew I’d become so fascinated by a Mexican actress and her reptile-inspired bling? Life is full of surprises, huh?
I guess that’s the story of how I got obsessed with Maria Felix and her Cartier jewelry. It was a fun ride, and I’m glad I got to share it with you all. Maybe next time you see a piece of jewelry, you’ll think about the story behind it, too. You never know what kind of wild tales you might uncover!
