So I was flipping through channels the other day and what do I stumble upon? “Splash.” Yeah, that old flick from the 80s with Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah. I hadn’t seen it in ages, and let me tell you, it brought back some memories.

First off, I totally forgot how young Tom Hanks looked! I mean, we’re talking baby-faced Tom Hanks here. And Daryl Hannah? Stunning as always. That mermaid tail, though… I can’t even imagine trying to swim around in that thing. It looked so cumbersome.
I started watching it, and I got sucked right in, just like the first time. I began to recall all those scenes where they had to, like, really make out. It’s funny, back then I didn’t think much of it, but now? Now I’m thinking about how awkward that must have been. I read somewhere that Daryl Hannah was, like, super shy about all that kissing. Apparently, she hadn’t really had a boyfriend by then. Can you believe it? 21 or 22 years old and terrified of kissing Tom Hanks!
Anyway, I kept watching. The whole movie is just so… cheesy, you know? But it’s that good kind of cheesy, the kind that makes you smile. I remember as a kid wanting to be a mermaid so badly after seeing this movie. Or at least find one. Every time I went to the beach, I’d be scanning the waves, hoping to catch a glimpse of a fin. Never happened, sadly.
I did notice some, uh, interesting editing choices this time around. They used some CGI to cover up Daryl Hannah’s, ahem, backside. I guess they were trying to make it more family-friendly for the newer generation, which is understandable. But the CGI hair just looked so fake!
Then I got curious and did some digging. Found out that “Splash” was directed by Ron Howard. That surprised me for some reason. It just doesn’t scream “Ron Howard movie” to me, you know? But it’s a fun fact, I guess.

So, I watched the whole thing. Start to finish. It was a good little trip down memory lane. “Splash” is definitely a product of its time. But even after all these years, it’s still a fun, lighthearted movie. Just remember, if you decide to watch it, be prepared for some serious 80s fashion, and some very questionable CGI.
It’s interesting, I used to watch “Splash” as a kid and dream of meeting a mermaid. Now, I’m just thinking about how difficult it must be to make a movie with a giant mermaid tail, and whether it’s PG or PG-13.
- Rating: Some of those scenes were pretty suggestive. It’s PG, or was it PG-13?
- Nudity: There is some nudity, mainly Daryl Hannah.
- Overall: Still a fun, charming movie.
