Okay, so I’ve been wanting to get that salon-quality manicure look at home, you know, without spending a fortune. I tried to do some research, but the more I read, the more confused I got. Finally, I decided to just give it a shot and see what happens.

First things first, I gathered all my tools. I already had some nail polish remover, a nail clipper, a file, and some old nail polishes. I also bought a cheap cuticle pusher and some new base and top coats. I wasn’t sure about this step, but I decided to start by trimming my nails. They were a bit uneven, so I carefully clipped them to a uniform length.
Prepping My Nails
Next, I tried to push back my cuticles. This part was a bit tricky because I didn’t want to hurt myself. I gently pushed the cuticles back with the tool I bought, and it wasn’t as bad as I thought. After that, I filed my nails. I’ve always been bad at this, but I tried my best to shape them nicely. I went for a simple rounded shape, nothing too fancy. It’s not perfect but it is great for the first time. I think the key here is to go slow and be gentle.
Once I was happy with the shape, I grabbed a buffer to smooth out the surface of my nails. This is supposed to help the polish adhere better, or something like that. I buffed each nail a few times until they felt smooth to the touch. Then, to make sure my nails were squeaky clean, I used some nail polish remover to wipe away any dust or oils. I also washed my hands. It turns out my hands are dirty.
Applying the Polish
Now for the fun part – the polish! I applied a thin layer of base coat to each nail. This is supposed to protect your nails and make the color last longer. I waited for it to dry completely before moving on to the next step. I chose a bright red color, one of my favorites. I carefully applied two coats, waiting for each coat to dry before applying the next. It’s important to apply thin coats to avoid clumps.
After the color was dry, I added a layer of top coat. This gives your nails a glossy finish and helps prevent chipping. I was pretty impressed with how it looked! To be honest, I was surprised at how well it turned out. My nails looked almost like I had gotten them done at a salon.

- Trim your nails.
- Push back your cuticles.
- File your nails into your desired shape.
- Buff the surface of your nails.
- Clean your nails with nail polish remover.
- Apply a base coat.
- Apply your chosen nail polish color.
- Apply a top coat.
It definitely took some practice and patience, but I think I’m getting the hang of it. I’m excited to try out different colors and designs next time. Maybe I’ll even try some nail art!
