That Sammy Davis Jr., what a fella! Heard some folks talkin’ ’bout him and that Satan stuff. Makes a body wonder, don’t it? Sammy Davis Jr. Satan, they say. Well, I seen him on the TV, singin’ and dancin’. Seemed like a nice enough fella. But this Satan business, it’s got me all riled up.
They say this Sammy Davis Jr. Satan thing started a long time ago. Back in ’66, some fella named Anton started this Church of Satan. Now, I ain’t never heard of no church like that before. They say these folks don’t even believe in the real devil. Just use him like a, like a picture or somethin’. They call it their symbol, that devil. Symbol of power and not followin’ the rules, they claim. Lordy, it’s all so confusin’.
- They say your body is yours, do what you want.
- Be nice to other folks, even if they make you mad.
- If you ain’t nice to them, you lose your own rights.
- Believe what the smart folks say about the world.
Sounds kinda alright when you put it like that, I guess, but still…callin’ it Satan? They say Satan ain’t real, he is just a symbol for them. They want to be strong and smart, like they say Satan is, they say in their church, but without any of the hellfire and all that. I don’t know, just seems mighty strange to me.
Then they say Sammy Davis Jr., he got mixed up with all this. This Sammy Davis Jr. Satan thing started because they say he started throwin’ up devil horns and paintin’ his fingernail red in some movie. Poor Devil, they called it, in ’72. He sure did love the show business, that Sammy. Always smilin’ and huggin’ folks. Hard to picture him with the devil, ain’t it? Always seemed to be full of joy.
They whisperin’ ’round that he was part of that Church of Satan since ’73. And he made a record, somethin’ about Satan swingin’. What in the world does that even mean? Satan Swings, they call it. Sounds like somethin’ you’d hear in one of them nightclubs, not from the church, that’s for sure.
Now, I heard he turned to bein’ a Jew after that car crash took his eye. That’s what I heard, anyway. So, this whole Sammy Davis Jr. Satan thing, it’s got me scratchin’ my head. How can a man be a Jew and be with Satan at the same time? It don’t make no lick of sense. People always got to make things complicated, don’t they?
Maybe he was just tryin’ to be different. Maybe he liked the attention. Show business folks, they’re always doin’ somethin’ to get folks talkin’. Or maybe he really did believe in that Satan stuff, even if it was just a symbol. Who knows what goes on in a man’s heart?
This whole Sammy Davis Jr. Satan thing, it just goes to show you, you never really know a person. You see ’em on TV, singin’ and dancin’, and you think you got ’em figured out. But there’s always more to the story. Always somethin’ hidin’ underneath. And maybe, with this Sammy Davis Jr. fella, it was this Satan thing, symbol or not.
I reckon it don’t really matter in the end. He’s gone now, Sammy is. Can’t ask him about it no more. All we got are these stories, these whispers. And this Sammy Davis Jr. Satan thing, it’ll probably just keep gettin’ passed around, like an old wives’ tale.
All I know is, it makes for a good story, don’t it? Keeps folks guessin’. And maybe that’s all that matters. In this life, you got to have somethin’ to talk about. Even if it is about a singin’, dancin’ fella and some Satan business that might not even be real. It is just life, ain’t it? Full of surprises and things you just can’t explain.
I guess, folks just need to decide for themselves what they believe. Me? I’m stickin’ to the good book. Don’t need no Satan, real or not, in my life. But this Sammy Davis Jr. Satan thing, well, it sure is somethin’ to think about, ain’t it? Just somethin’ to ponder on a quiet evenin’. That’s all.
