Okay, so I’ve been rocking short hair for a while now, and let me tell you, sometimes it feels like styling options are super limited. But I was scrolling through my social media feeds the other day, and I kept seeing all these gorgeous braided hairstyles. Problem was, most of them were on people with long, flowing locks. Still, I thought, “Why not give it a shot?”

So, I decided to try my hand at braiding my short hair. First, I washed my hair and added some texturizing spray while it was still damp. I figured this would give my hair some grip and make it easier to braid. This is what most people seem to recommend.
I started with a simple one, like the kind of side braid you used to do on your Barbie dolls. I grabbed a small section of hair near my temple and started to braid. It was tricky, to be honest. My hair kept slipping out, and the braid was so tiny it was barely visible! I was getting frustrated but I kept practicing and I used a mirror to look at my back side and I used two mirror to look at my side.
- First thing, I tried cornrows. It’s no shocker that cornrows have remained popular. Since my hair is short, making cornrows was a bit hard. I watched some tutorials online for a couple hours and started to section my hair into small rows. The braiding itself took forever, and my arms were killing me by the end. But man, the result was pretty cool! They looked really neat and tidy.
- Then I tried to do mini braids. The idea was to create a bunch of tiny braids all over my head. This one was tough. My fingers felt like they were going to fall off, and the braids were so small, they didn’t really show up that well. I spent like an hour on it and then gave up.
- Next up was the French braid. This was a bit challenging but I had done it before on longer hair, so I figured I could do it. I tried it on the side of my head, pulling in small pieces of hair as I went. It actually turned out okay! It looked kind of cute and added a little something extra to my usual style. I used a hair band to secure the end of the braid.
- I also attempted a Dutch braid, which is basically like a French braid but in reverse. It’s supposed to look like the braid is sitting on top of your hair instead of woven in. I tried this one a few times and followed online instructions, but it just looked like a messy French braid, so I scrapped that idea.
I got to say, the cornrows and the side French braid were my favorites. The mini braids and the Dutch braid? Not so much. But hey, it was a fun experiment! It just goes to show that even with short hair, you can still have some fun with braids. It just takes a little practice and a whole lot of patience. I decided to stick with the cornrows for now. It added a different touch to my short hair which made me pretty satisfied. I think the most important part of the experience is to enjoy the process and not be afraid to try some new things.
Final Thoughts
If you’re thinking about braiding your short hair, go for it! It might take some trial and error, but you might be surprised at what you can do. And don’t be afraid to get creative! As you know, unlike trends like skinny jeans, that so many women can’t get in on because of their body type or because of age, braids can be worn by everyone. And it’s fun! This schoolgirl staple has been hitting the runway and the red carpet for a few years now. I also found that peekaboo braids can add that subtle and unique touch to the hairstyle. Just prepare for a bit of an arm workout, and you might want to have a friend on standby to help with the back of your head! This is just my personal experience, I believe everyone will have different result.
