Okay, here is a blog post sharing my experience making a saddle bag with a strap:

Alright, folks, gather ’round! I’ve got a fun little project I just finished up, and I’m itching to spill the beans. So, I decided to make myself a saddle bag with strap. It has a cool, vintage vibe that I really like. And you know what? It turned out pretty darn good, if I do say so myself. Now, I’m no pro, but I’ve dabbled in a bit of crafting here and there.
First things first, I needed to round up my materials. I wanted something durable but also stylish, so I went with some good quality leather I found at a local shop. It’s this beautiful, rich brown color that I think will age really well. And of course, I needed some sturdy hardware – buckles, rings, you know, the whole nine yards. That wasn’t too hard to come by either.
Then came the fun part – figuring out the design. I sketched out a few ideas, taking inspiration from some of the trendy designs I saw online. I wanted something classic but with a bit of a modern twist. After a bit of tweaking, I finally settled on a design I loved. A simple flap closure, a nice roomy interior, and an adjustable strap so I can wear it however I want.
Next, I started cutting the leather. Now, this was a bit tricky. You need a steady hand and a sharp knife to get those clean cuts. I laid out my pattern pieces, traced them onto the leather, and carefully cut them out. There were a few slip-ups, but hey, that’s part of the process, right?
- Cut the main body pieces
- Cut the strap pieces
- Cut the flap and any interior pockets
Once all the pieces were cut, I started assembling the bag. I used a heavy-duty thread and a leather needle to hand-stitch everything together. It was a bit time-consuming, but honestly, I found it pretty therapeutic. Plus, hand-stitching gives it that nice, rustic look that I was going for.

Stitching and Shaping
After the main body of the bag was stitched together, I added the hardware. The buckles, the rings for the strap, all that jazz. This was a bit fiddly, but with a bit of patience, I managed to get everything in place.
Then, it was time to attach the strap. I made it adjustable using a buckle, so I can wear the bag crossbody or over the shoulder, depending on my mood. I stitched the strap to the rings I’d attached to the sides of the bag, making sure it was nice and secure.
Finally, I gave the whole bag a good once-over, trimming any loose threads and making sure everything was looking neat and tidy. And voila! My very own handmade saddle bag was complete. It took a few days, a lot of patience, and a couple of minor mishaps along the way, but I’m really happy with how it turned out. It’s got that perfect blend of style and durability, just like those fancy designer ones, but with a personal touch that makes it extra special.
I’ve been using it for a couple of weeks now, and I’ve gotten so many compliments on it. It’s the perfect size for everyday essentials, and the leather is already starting to develop a beautiful patina. I’m already thinking about making another one, maybe in a different color, or with some added embellishments. The possibilities are endless!
