Okay, so I tried to recreate that 90’s layered blowout hair look, and let me tell you, it was a journey. I’ve always loved that voluminous, bouncy style from back in the day, so I figured, why not give it a shot?

First off, I had to dig out my old round brush and hair dryer. I haven’t used those in ages! I also picked up some volumizing mousse and hairspray, ’cause those seemed essential. I watched a bunch of tutorials online, and they made it look so easy. Spoiler: it’s not as simple as it looks.
I started with freshly washed, damp hair. I applied a generous amount of the volumizing mousse, focusing on the roots. Then came the tricky part – the blow-drying. I sectioned my hair and used the round brush to lift it at the roots while drying. I tried to create that classic C-shape by curling the ends inwards, but my hair has a mind of its own. Some sections cooperated, others just went limp or frizzy. It was a real arm workout, I’ll tell ya.
- Section hair
- Apply volumizing mousse
- Blow-dry with a round brush, lifting at the roots
- Try to create a C-shape with the ends
- Curse at the sections that won’t cooperate
After what felt like an eternity, I had somewhat achieved the look. It wasn’t perfect, definitely not like the pictures, but it had more volume than usual. I could see some layers trying to peek through. I quickly sprayed it all over with hairspray, hoping it would hold. And then, of course, I had to add that headband for the full 90s effect, right?
The Final Look
The final look was…interesting. It was voluminous, sure, but also a bit messy. I guess my hair just isn’t used to this kind of styling. But hey, it was fun to try, and I got a good laugh out of it. Maybe with more practice, I can master the 90’s layered blowout. Or maybe I’ll just stick to my usual air-dry routine. We’ll see!
