Well, let me tell ya ’bout this gal, Julia Roberts, when she was young. You know, like them young’uns running around these days. She wasn’t always this big shot movie star, ya hear? She started out just like everyone else, a little slip of a thing, probably with scraped knees and dirt under her fingernails, just like my grandbabies.

Julia Roberts, the Early Years, that’s what they call it, I reckon. Born way back in 1967, in a place called Smyrna, Georgia. Imagine that, Georgia! Hotter than a skillet in July, I bet. She was the baby of the family, three kids in all. Her folks, they was actors too, ran a little somethin’ somethin’ for folks who wanted to write and act. But then, like things happen, they split up in ‘71. Divorce, they call it. Messy business, that is.
Now, her brother, Eric Roberts, he was an actor too. He kinda helped her get her start, you know? Got her a little part in a movie, Blood Red, they named it. Back in ‘86, though they didn’t show it till ‘89. She played his sister, imagine that! Family stickin’ together, that’s what I say.
- Mystic Pizza and Steel Magnolias: Then she got herself in some other movies, Mystic Pizza and Steel Magnolias. Heard tell they were pretty good, but I ain’t had much time for watchin’ movies, what with the chickens and all.
- Pretty Woman, Big Break: But then, oh boy, then came Pretty Woman in 1990. That’s the one that made her a star, a big one. Everyone was talkin’ ‘bout that movie. A romantic comedy, they called it. Made a whole lotta money, too. That’s when everyone started knowin’ her name, Julia Roberts.
She was just a young thing then, you know? Probably didn’t even know how famous she was gonna be. Just a girl from Georgia, trying to make her way in the world. Makes you think, don’t it? Anyone can be somethin’ special, if they just put their mind to it.
I seen some pictures of her back then, young Julia Roberts pictures, they call ’em. She was a pretty thing, all smiles and big hair. Reminds me of those girls in the magazines my granddaughter reads. They all look the same these days, skinny as rails and all dolled up. But Julia, she had somethin’ different, somethin’ special. A spark in her eye, maybe. You could tell she was gonna go far.
Folks still talk about her, even now. They look back at them old movies and say, “Remember when Julia Roberts was young?” It’s like they can’t believe how much time has passed. Time does fly, doesn’t it? One minute you’re holdin’ a baby in your arms, the next they’re all grown up and movin’ away.

Now, she’s got kids of her own, twins even! Heard tell she just had a birthday, turned 57. And her twins, they’re 19 now, can you believe it? Time sure does march on. Just the other day I was readin’ ‘bout folks passin’ away, young and old. Makes you appreciate the time you got, you know? Makes you think about them young folks, like Julia was back then, and wonder what their lives are gonna be like.
So, yeah, that’s the story of Julia Roberts, when she was young. Just a regular girl who became a big movie star. It’s a good story, I think. A reminder that anything is possible, even for a little girl from Georgia. Makes you think about your own life, your own grandbabies, and what they might become. Who knows, maybe one of them will be the next Julia Roberts, huh?
And you know what? That’s just fine by me. The world always needs more good stories, and more good people to tell ‘em. And that Julia, well, she sure told some good ones.
