Okay, so, I’ve been eyeing this Saint Laurent dress for, like, forever. It’s one of those classic pieces, you know? Super simple, but elegant. I finally decided to go for it, recreate this dress for myself. It’s time to take the plunge and try to make it.

First, I searched for a fabric that felt right. The original dress is probably silk or something fancy, but I wanted something more practical, also more budget friendly. Finally, I found this gorgeous black jersey knit. It had a nice drape and felt super comfy. Bought around 3 yards, just to be safe.
Next step, the pattern. I couldn’t find a pattern for this exact dress. I decided to wing it. I took one of my basic shift dresses that fit me well and used it as a starting point. I laid it out on the fabric and traced around it, leaving extra room for seam allowances, of course.
The Saint Laurent dress has this subtle cowl neck, right? So I draped some extra fabric at the neckline, pinning and playing with it until it looked somewhat decent. It took a few tries, let me tell you! But, I think I got the basic shape figured out. I also added a simple sleeve to my pattern, just a basic cap sleeve. I wanted it to be similar to the original, so I kept the length long and the fit pretty loose.
Then came the cutting, so carefully cutting out all the pieces. I double-checked everything before cutting because, you know, measure twice, cut once! After cutting, I pinned the pieces together, following the lines I had drawn. It was starting to look like a dress! I’m so excited to see it!
Sewing time! I dusted off my sewing machine and got to work. I started with the shoulders, then the side seams. The jersey knit was a bit tricky to sew, kept stretching out of shape. I used a walking foot, which helped a lot. And, of course, I took my time, no rushing.

- Sewed the cowl neck. It’s not perfect, but I like it.
- Attached the sleeves.
- Hemmed the bottom and the sleeves.
And… it’s done! I tried it on, and honestly, I’m pretty happy with how it turned out! It’s not an exact replica, but it definitely has that Saint Laurent vibe. It’s comfy, it’s chic, and I made it myself! Feeling pretty proud right now. Maybe I’ll wear it out this weekend. What do you guys think?
What I Learned
This project taught me a lot about draping and working with knit fabrics. Definitely going to try making more clothes in the future. Maybe a skirt next? Or a top? The possibilities are endless!
