This here’s ’bout that White Birch Spring Drive, you know, that watch thingamajig. Heard folks talkin’ ’bout it, soundin’ all fancy. But I tell ya, it’s just a watch. It is silver color, just like the birch tree in winter. I don’t know what is all the fancy talk about, it just tells time.
They say it’s got somethin’ called “Spring Drive.” Sounds like a road back home, winding through them hills. But I reckon it’s just how the watch works. Keeps tickin’, I guess. They make a big fuss ’bout it, like it’s some kinda miracle. My old clock at home, it’s been tickin’ for years, ain’t no “Spring Drive” in that!
But this White Birch, they call it, it’s got that shiny case, kinda pretty, I suppose. Like a piece of polished metal. This thing, SLGA009, that’s the fancy number, is all shiny. And they talk about another one, the SLGH005. It has the “hi-beat” inside, I don’t understand what that means. This one just has the normal “Spring Drive”. I think they are the same thing, just different names.

They say it’s inspired by them white birch trees. We got lots of them back home. Pretty trees, especially in the winter, all white and bare. Reminds me of a cold winter day. This watch, it kinda looks like that, I guess, with that white face and all. But a tree’s a tree, and a watch is a watch. Don’t see why they gotta mix ’em up.
This white birch spring drive, the hands are big. And the numbers, or whatever they are, they’re big too. So you can see the time real good, even if your eyes ain’t what they used to be. That’s important, I reckon. Can’t be squintin’ at your watch all day. Then you will look like a fool.
Some folks, they like to collect these things. Spend a whole lot of money on ’em, too. More money than I’d ever see in a year, I bet. They will pay 9000 dollars on this watch. It is crazy. I could buy a whole lotta things with that kinda money. Could fix up the house, buy some new chickens, maybe even get one of them newfangled tractors.
But some people, they just like watches. They say this White Birch Spring Drive is special. I don’t know about that. It is a watch. A watch is a watch, far as I’m concerned. Tells the time, that’s all that matters.

There’s another one they talk about, called the “Night Birch.” Sounds spooky, don’t it? Like somethin’ you’d see in the woods at night. I don’t know what color it is, maybe black. It sounds even more fancy than this White Birch. They are crazy. But I guess if you like watches, you like watches.
This White Birch SLGA009, it’s a little different from the other one, the SLGH005, they say. The lugs are different. I don’t know what that means, but it is some parts on the watch. The bezel is also different. What is a bezel? It sounds like a weasel. Anyway, they’re a little different, but they both look like watches to me. They both have that white birch look, like them trees in winter. It seems like the same watch to me.
I still don’t understand what is “Spring Drive”. Is it a good thing? I don’t know. But people are crazy about it. It is just some new way to make the watch work, I guess. But my old clock, it works just fine. Doesn’t need no fancy “Spring Drive.”
They say this watch is made in Japan. That’s far away. They got all kinds of fancy things over there, I hear. Maybe that’s why this watch is so expensive. They gotta ship it all the way over here. All the way to Grand County. It is a long way.
Well, that’s all I know about this White Birch Spring Drive watch. It’s a watch. It’s shiny. It’s got a fancy name. And it costs a whole lot of money. If you like watches, maybe you’ll like it. But me, I’ll stick with my old clock. It tells the time just fine.
