Okay, so today I wanna share my journey of doing the mermaid goddess braids. I’ve seen this hairstyle everywhere and finally decided to give it a shot. Let me tell you, it wasn’t as easy as those online videos make it look, but it was totally worth it!

First things first, I prepared my hair. I had read somewhere that it’s good to strengthen your hair before braiding to avoid breakage, so I applied a protein treatment. I slathered it on, covered my hair with a plastic bag like some kitchen experiment, and waited for about 20 minutes. Then, I rinsed it out completely. After that, I applied a deep conditioner because, apparently, moisture is key. Left that on for another 20 minutes and rinsed again. My hair already felt so much softer and healthier.
Next, I gathered all my supplies. I had bought some “ocean wave” hair extensions, and let me just say, the lady at the store was right – don’t cheap out on these. The good quality ones are way easier to work with. I also had a rat-tail comb, hair clips, and a whole lot of rubber bands ready to go.
Now, onto the actual braiding. I decided to start with French braids because I figured it’s a good way to get the hang of things. I sectioned my hair and started braiding. It took a few tries to get the tension right, but I slowly got the hang of it. My fingers were definitely getting a workout! I practiced a few times, and honestly, it felt like my fingers were developing muscle memory or something.
- Sectioning: This is where that rat-tail comb came in handy. I divided my hair into sections, trying to keep them as even as possible.
- Integrating the Extensions: This was the tricky part. I started incorporating the ocean wave hair into my French braids, making sure it blended well. It took some trial and error, but I eventually figured out a method that worked for me.
- Securing the Ends: Once I reached the end of each braid, I secured it with a small rubber band. I tried to make sure they were tight enough to hold but not too tight to damage my hair.
The whole process took me several hours, not gonna lie. I took breaks in between because my arms were getting tired. I watched some TV, snacked a bit, and then went back to braiding. It was a whole day event, but seeing the progress kept me motivated.
Finally, after what felt like forever, I finished! I looked in the mirror, and wow, I was impressed with myself. The mermaid goddess braids looked amazing! They were so flowy and had that perfect mix of neatness and bohemian vibe. I felt like a completely different person.

My Tips
- Be patient: This hairstyle takes time, especially if you’re a beginner. Don’t rush it, and take breaks when you need to.
- Practice makes perfect: Don’t get discouraged if your first few braids aren’t perfect. Keep practicing, and you’ll get better.
- Watch tutorials: There are tons of videos online that can show you different techniques. Find one that works for you and follow along.
- Have fun: Enjoy the process and don’t be afraid to experiment. It’s just hair, and it’ll grow back!
So yeah, that’s my mermaid goddess braids story. It was a challenge, but I’m so glad I did it. I’ve been getting so many compliments, and it’s definitely a hairstyle I’ll be rocking again. If you’re thinking about trying it, I say go for it! Just be prepared to put in some time and effort. You won’t regret it!
