Hey everyone, so I’ve been digging into this whole world of African American fashion designers lately, and let me tell you, it’s been quite the journey! I started with a simple search, just curious about who’s who in the industry, and it snowballed from there.

First, I just wanted to get a feel for the big names. You know, the ones everyone’s talking about. So, I hit up Google and started typing in “African American fashion designers.” Right off the bat, names like Brandon Blackwood and Telfar Clemens popped up. I’d seen their stuff on social media, especially those trendy bags from Brandon Blackwood, but I didn’t know much about them beyond that. It’s like, you see something cool on Instagram, but you don’t really think about the person behind it, you know?
Diving Deeper
After that, I decided to go a bit deeper. I started looking into the history, and that’s where I found out about Ann Lowe. Turns out, she was a real pioneer, designing gowns way back in the day. There was this one dress from 1957, made with Chantilly lace and silk satin, that just blew me away. It made me realize that Black designers have been killing it in the fashion game for decades, even if they weren’t always getting the recognition they deserved.
Then I started looking at more contemporary designers. I checked out Pharrell Williams’ work and, of course, Rihanna’s. I mean, who hasn’t heard of them? But seeing their designs alongside other names I hadn’t heard before really opened my eyes to the sheer talent out there.
Making a List
So, I made a list. Not just of the big names, but also of designers who are up and coming, or maybe just haven’t hit the mainstream yet. I scoured articles, scrolled through endless Instagram feeds, and read up on their backgrounds. It was a lot of work, but honestly, it felt more like an adventure.
Here’s a glimpse of what I compiled:

- Ann Lowe: A true legend. She was making couture dresses back when it wasn’t even a thing for Black women.
- Brandon Blackwood: His bags are everywhere right now, and for good reason. They’re modern, stylish, and just plain cool.
- Telfar Clemens: I see his name all over social media, and his designs are definitely making waves.
- Pharrell Williams: This guy’s a powerhouse, not just in music but in fashion too.
- Rihanna: She’s turned into a fashion icon, and her designs are as bold and unique as she is.
Realizing the Impact
This whole process really made me appreciate the impact these designers have had on the industry. They’ve dressed celebrities, shown at fashion week, and just generally created some amazing art. But more than that, they’ve paved the way for future generations of Black designers. They’ve shown that there’s space for everyone in fashion, no matter your background.
In the end, what started as a simple curiosity turned into a full-blown research project. I’ve learned so much, and I’m still learning. There are so many talented designers out there, and I’m excited to see what they do next. It’s a reminder that fashion is always evolving, and it’s important to pay attention to who’s shaping it. And that is what I did today.
