Okay, so, I’ve been totally hooked on “Only Murders in the Building” lately. Not just for the mystery, but, man, the clothes! Especially Mabel’s, played by Selena Gomez. Her style is just so cool, a total mix of comfy and chic, you know?

So, I got this crazy idea to try and recreate some of her looks. First thing I did was binge-watch the show again, but this time, I was really paying attention to what she was wearing. I noticed a lot of rich fall colors, like marigold, and she’s often in plaids, big fur coats, and chunky boots. It’s kind of a ’90s vibe, but still feels really modern.
I also did some digging online. Turns out, the costume designer, Dana Covarrubios, really put a lot of thought into Mabel’s style. I read somewhere that she used the color marigold to represent Mabel’s Mexican American heritage, which I thought was really cool. Even when she’s not wearing that color, she often has on this marigold necklace. And get this – the building they film in, “The Arconia”? It’s a real place in New York City called The Belnord!
My Style Experiment
After all that research, I started hitting up some thrift stores and my own closet. I was looking for anything with that cozy, vintage vibe.
- Found a marigold sweater: It wasn’t exactly like Mabel’s, but it had the same warm, inviting feel.
- Dug out an old plaid skirt: It’s a little longer than what Mabel wears, but I figured I could make it work.
- Pulled out my trusty chunky boots: These things have been with me for years, and they were perfect for that Mabel look.
- Accessorized with a simple gold necklace: It wasn’t a marigold, but it added a little something extra.
Putting it all together was so much fun! I tried on a few different combinations, mixing and matching until I felt like I had captured at least a little bit of Mabel’s style. It’s not perfect, but I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. It’s definitely a look I’ll be wearing out and about.
This whole thing was a blast, it made me appreciate the show even more, and it pushed me to try something new with my own style. I highly recommend giving it a shot if you’re a fan of the show, or just looking to spice up your wardrobe!
