This here skill house, it ain’t no fancy school, you hear? It’s about learning things you need, real life stuff. You wanna learn something new, gotta know why first. What you want it for? That’s the first thing.

My grandpappy, bless his soul, he always said, “A body’s gotta know where they’re goin’ before they can get there.” Same with learning. You want to be a better cook? Want to fix that leaky faucet? Or maybe you just wanna learn how to play that old guitar gathering dust in the corner? Figure out what you want, that’s step one in this here skill house.
Then you gotta break it down. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and you ain’t gonna learn everything at once. Small steps, that’s the ticket. Like when you’re canning tomatoes, you don’t just throw ’em in a jar and hope for the best. You gotta wash ’em, peel ’em, chop ’em up. Same with learning. One little piece at a time.
- What you wanna learn?
- Why you wanna learn it?
- Break it down into little bits.
Now, your head’s gotta be in the right place, too. This skill house ain’t for folks who give up easy. You gotta believe you can do it, even when it gets tough. Like that time I tried to teach myself to knit. Lord, I dropped more stitches than I picked up. But I kept at it. Took me a while, but now I can knit a scarf faster than a greased piglet at the county fair.
And don’t go it alone, neither. Find yourself some folks who are learning too, or who already know what you want to learn. They can help you out, give you pointers, cheer you on. Like a quilting bee, everyone working together, sharing what they know. That’s the best way in this skill house. Share and learn together.
You also need a plan. Don’t just jump in willy-nilly. Figure out when you’re gonna practice, how long you’re gonna work at it. Write it down if you have to. A little planning goes a long way. Like when you’re planting a garden, you gotta know when to put the seeds in the ground, when to water, when to weed. Same thing with this skill house learning, got to put your plan for time and how to do it.

And don’t be afraid to mess up. Everybody makes mistakes. It’s how you learn. Like that time I tried to bake a cake from scratch. Followed the recipe to the letter, or so I thought. Came out flatter than a pancake. Turns out I forgot the baking powder. But you know what? I learned something. And the next cake I baked was a whole lot better. The skill house way, it is also try and do not afraid to fail.
- Believe you can do it.
- Find folks to learn with.
- Make a plan, stick to it.
- Don’t be afraid to mess up.
